Muslim Contestant to become the 1st to wear KAFTAN instead of swimsuit

Muslim Miss Universe GB contestant Muna Jama will be allowed to wear a kaftan (seen left)

A muslim Miss Universe Great Britain contestant will become the first to wear a kaftan during the competition's swimsuit segment. 27-year-old Muna Jama informed organizers that she was uncomfortable wearing a swimsuit because of her religious beliefs. In an interview, the London-based contestant said: "I wouldn't wear a swimsuit to a beach, so I'm not going to wear one in a competition to score points."

The competition will be held in Cardiff in June and the winner will represent Great Britain in the Miss Universe contest. This is Muna's second attempt at requesting the organizers to allow her to wear a kaftan. She pulled out of the contest two years ago after her request was denied.

Muna says she is now ready for the contest in June

Her experience of witnessing the migrant crisis during visits to Egypt and Somalia prompted her to enter the competition again this year with the aim of raising awareness.

The Somalia-born model said: "These pageants are associated with beauty and modelling but over the years there has been a platform for other females using their platform differently. What I wanted to do was to raise awareness of what I have been working so hard for."

"We see ourselves sitting at the top table with the big boys," says father Perry Hughes confidently. "We don't think we're taking on the competition." It might sound optimistic to put your family business in the same league as the multi-billion dollar social networks but the Hughes family certainly have the passion to give it a go. Their big idea is GameDay Xtra, which has the bold ambition of hosting a page for every single sports team and player in the world - with even the humblest of leagues able to share their own news. Son Sam, 21, has suspended his university studies and works through the night on the project. Daughter Mollie, 18, handles the social media side. GameDay is purely for sports fans, the family say.
