AV-Test, a Madgeburg, Germany-based security firm, periodically evaluates all sorts of antivirus software, and its latest round of testing zeroed in on Windows 10. As usual, the company evaluated a variety of programs in three categories: Protection (how well a program stood up to both known and zero-day malware threats), Performance (how it affected a PC's overall performance) and Usability (how easy the program is to operate). Each category was worth six points, for a potential total of 18. MORE:  Best Antivirus Software and Apps Only Avira Antivirus Pro and Kaspersky Internet Security received

Movie Subtitles Can Let Hackers Attack Your PC

A security vulnerability in the way that popular video players like VLC and Kodi load third-party subtitles has been brought to light by Israeli security firm  Check Point . The firm points out that malicious subtitles could run code on a PC, essentially giving attackers full access. Check Point specifically called out Kodi, VLC, Popcorn Time and strem.io as being vulnerable to this type of attack, though it's possible that other video-playing software that uses third-party subtitles may also be affected. As of this writing, VLC and Popcorn Time have both issued updates that fix the vulnerability, and Kodi and strem.io are said to be working on patches. In  a video,  Check Point demonstrated the vulnerability in Popcorn Time and Kodi, taking over users' computers when they launched the subtitles. The malicious subtitles are likely to come from online repositories that allow public submissions, making it possible for anyone to put malicious files up for public

Most Popular Phone? It's Not iPhone 7 or Galaxy

It appears that Apple's smallest, simplest iPhone is still its most popular. The results for the latest American Customer Satisfaction Index survey are in, and sitting at the top is Apple's iPhone SE , a bite-sized spinoff device that came out over a year ago. After a poll of over 36,000 customers, the iPhone SE netted 87 points out of a possible 100, putting it just ahead of the Galaxy S6 Edge+ (86 points) and iPhone 7 Plus (86 points).   Rounding out the top 5 are the Galaxy S6 Edge (85) and Galaxy S7 (84). The standard iPhone 7 came in 9th with 83 points. Despite its more powerful competition, it's not hard to see why the iPhone SE came out on top. Motorola tried it with the  Atrix  and failed. Fujitsu thought about trying it with the  Lifebook 2013  concept, and failed. And a handful of Windows Mobile phones, including the  HP Elite x3 ,  Acer Liquid Jade Primo  and Microsoft  Lumia 950  tried it, and haven't mustered anything more than the most lukewarm of receptions. But that's not going to stop Samsung and its new DeX Station for the  Galaxy S8  from becoming the latest in a long line of devices that have trie
