The Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government has issued a formal response to the attack on the president by ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, NAN reports. The Presidency gave its response on Wednesday, January 24, via the minister of information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed. According to Mohammaed, the Buhari-government had received Obasanjo’s message in good faith. It was noted that the minister further thanked the ex-president for his “positive comments”, even as he proceeded to set the record straight. Two Americans and two Canadians who were abducted by gunmen in northern Nigeria this week have been rescued, a police official said Saturday. All four are safe and in Nigeria's capital, Abuja, with the US and Canadian embassies, Nigeria's State Commissioner of Police Agyole Abeh told CNN by phone. Nigerian police have arrested a suspect in connection with the abduction and are pursuing others, he said. The four foreigners were rescued in the Jere area of the Kagarko local government area of Kaduna state, he said. The rescue operation followed a massive police manhunt, Abeh said, adding that no ransom was paid for the foreigners' release. Gunmen raided the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul, leaving at least five people dead in a 12-hour siege with security forces that ended Sunday, Afghan authorities say. A foreigner was among those killed before Afghan forces secured the hotel, according to Nasrat Rahimi, a deputy spokesman for the Interior Ministry. Seven Afghans were also wounded, he said. Afghan security forces went on every floor of the six-story hotel in a clearing operation that left four attackers dead, ministry spokesman Najib Danish said. The Interior Ministry first said five people were killed, but its spokesmen later said six people. The ministry said the attackers were affiliated with the Pakistan-based Haqqani network.
